VINTAGE DRUM VALUES

Today's technology gives the modern percussionist a myriad of choices in equipment with seemingly every tone and quality imaginable available.  Despite this, vintage percussion persists in maintaining a certain appeal for the discriminating collector and artist that cannot be duplicated.

Apart from the historical significance that an instrument may have, there are numerous factors that influence the values.  Many manufacturers no longer existing created their own uniquely crafted products that produced very distinct and difficult to duplicate tones.  The signature sound of some of these instruments might be compared to the uniqueness of a singer's voice - although there may be similar voices, no two are exactly alike.

One of the key factors in vintage instruments is the quality of the materials that was available years ago.  Some of the natural elements such as rare woods and exotic skins are either extinct, legally restricted, or too prohibitive in cost to utilize in today's commercial equipment.

Another important factor in the vintage percussion is the difference in the craftsmanship.  While the vast majority of modern equipment comes off mass production lines, often in countries where economical labor is available, there are vintage instruments that were either entirely or at least partially hand crafted, sometimes by experienced artists themselves.  Even many of the production line products of years ago were carefully monitored by expert crafts persons.

Combined with these factors and others, an instrument that can be verified as having been owned, used, endorsed, or signed by a famous artist or that can be traced to a significant event (e.g. Woodstock) carries an additional value that can reach figures meriting investment consideration.
